Eddie Redmayne, who plays Newt Scamander in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, will also be playing the lead role in a new 1920s drama titled The Danish Girl.
At a screening of the film hosted by The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences in New York, Redmayne spoke about how his research for the film involved meeting with transgender women to truly understand their experiences.
The Danish Girl is the biographical story of Lili Elbe, a Danish artist who was the very first recipient of the sex reassignment surgery. Directed by Tom Hooper, the film follows Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, who Lili is married to, as they both experience a pivotal shift in their lives. According to JustJared.com, the Theory of Everything star discussed how he prepared for the role. Saying,
The way I approached this [role] was meeting with trans women of different generations…and hearing their experiences. They were incredibly generous with educating me.
